Every knife spec sheet leads with blade length. Closed length gets a passing mention. Height and width of the closed knife almost never appear at all. This is exactly backwards from how carry actually works.

Here is something I don't say enough: I don't carry all of my knives. Not because I have too many. I do, but that's beside the point, but because some of them live in the drawer in a way that has nothing to do with blade length, steel, or lock type. The knife that stays home isn't always the one with the wrong blade. It's often the one that fills the pocket in a way that registers, somehow, as too much. Not too heavy, not too long. Just too present. Too thick. Too tall. Too there.

Blade length is the spec the knife world has agreed to care about. It appears first on every spec sheet, drives most purchase decisions, and gets cited in arguments about size categories. It matters. A 2.5" blade and a 3.5" blade are genuinely different tools. But blade length is a measurement of what the knife does when open. What determines whether you actually put it in your pocket every morning is almost entirely a function of what the knife is when closed, its height, its width, its total cross-sectional presence in a pocket. And almost nobody talks about that.

The three dimensions that actually determine carry

When a knife sits in your pocket, three measurements govern the experience. The first is closed length, how far the knife extends from top to bottom of the pocket. This one gets measured and listed, though rarely discussed in terms of what it means for carry. The second is handle thickness, how far the knife pushes outward from your leg. This one gets mentioned occasionally. The third is handle height, how much vertical space the closed knife occupies in cross-section, meaning how much it bulges outward in the pocket above and below the blade. This one almost never appears on a spec sheet, and it's frequently the most important of the three.

A knife with a tall handle profile, one with significant distance between the spine and the bottom of the handle scales, creates a noticeable presence in the pocket that has nothing to do with its length or weight. The knife occupies real estate. It pushes fabric outward. It creates a visible silhouette through clothing. Whether or not any of this matters depends entirely on what you're wearing and where you're carrying, but it explains why two knives with identical blade lengths can feel completely different in a pocket.

The PM2, a legend, designed that way on purpose

The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is one of the best production folders ever made. The compression lock, the full flat grind, the ergonomics, the four-position clip, the USA manufacture, it is correct on essentially every dimension that matters to performance. It deserves every piece of its reputation and I will not be taking that away from it here.

But the PM2 has a closed handle height that is deliberately generous. The scales are shaped to provide a full, ergonomic grip in use, which means they have real volume when closed. At 4.82" long and with a handle profile that extends meaningfully above and below the blade, the PM2 occupies a specific kind of pocket real estate. The lanyard hole adds to the overall footprint. The clip, while excellent, sits proud enough to be felt. None of this is a flaw. Spyderco made deliberate decisions about what the PM2 is optimized for, and the answer is performance in hand, which requires a handle with substance. The closed carry experience is the price of that, and for many people it's a price they're happy to pay because the knife is that good.

But it's also why some people who own a PM2 and love it don't carry it every day. Not because of the blade, not because of the weight, not because of any spec sheet number. Because of the closed cross-section.

The contrast: Osborne and Lander 2

Put a Benchmade Osborne 940 next to a PM2. Both knives have a 3.4" blade. Both are full-sized EDC folders. Both are extremely well-made USA production knives with strong communities and long track records. The blade length is identical. The carry experience is not.

The Osborne's aluminum handle is slim and low-profile in a way that's immediately apparent when both knives are in hand. The handle thickness is 0.41" against the PM2's roughly 0.5". The handle height, that cross-sectional bulge, is considerably lower because Warren Osborne designed a knife where the closed geometry was part of the brief. The result is a knife that closes into something closer to a rectangle than an oval. It disappears in a pocket in a way the PM2 simply doesn't. Same blade length, genuinely different carry.

The Knafs Lander 2 makes the same argument from a different direction. At 4.15" closed with a handle that's designed to sit flat and low in a pocket, the Lander 2 carries smaller than its blade length suggests. The open-backed construction removes material that would otherwise add height. The flat profile of the G10 scales keeps the cross-section honest. Ben Petersen designed a knife where what it feels like to carry was as much a part of the design as what it feels like to use, and the Lander 2 shows that thinking.

Blade-to-handle ratio, the CJRB argument

There's a related concept that doesn't have a standard name but that experienced carriers understand immediately: blade-to-handle ratio. A knife where the blade length represents a high proportion of the overall closed length carries differently, more efficiently, more compactly, than a knife where the handle is generous relative to the blade. The CJRB Maximal is a good example of a knife with an excellent blade-to-handle ratio: the blade is long relative to the handle, which means you're getting a lot of cutting edge per inch of pocket real estate. The CJRB Bolt takes a different approach, narrow and compact in the other dimension, making it fidget-friendly and easy to forget about in a pocket even though it's a full-sized knife by blade length.

This ratio isn't inherently better when higher. A longer handle provides better ergonomics and more surface area for grip. But when carry-ability is the priority, when the knife that gets carried every day is the one that disappears, the blade-to-handle ratio matters and it's worth knowing what it is before you buy.

The TiSlim thesis

The Vosteed TiSlim line is the most explicit argument currently in production that closed dimensions deserve to be treated as a primary spec. The Porcupine TiSlim at 0.315" overall thickness, the entire assembled knife, not just the blade, is thinner than three sticks of gum stacked together. The Parallel TiSlim is thinner still at 0.28". These numbers are not achieved by compromising blade length or steel quality. The Porcupine TiSlim has a 3.04" blade in 154CM or S90V. It carries like it isn't there because Vosteed made the closed cross-section the engineering problem to solve, rather than an afterthought.

The TiSlim line didn't invent thin folders. But it made an unusually explicit case, by name, by spec, by design, that overall closed thickness is worth optimizing for. The fact that it's become one of the more talked-about production lines of the last two years suggests the argument landed.

The clip is part of this conversation

Closed dimensions don't exist in isolation from the clip. A knife with excellent closed geometry and a proud, deep clip can still be uncomfortable to carry because the clip adds to the cross-sectional presence in a pocket. Wire clips, common on the TiSlim family and on a handful of other carry-optimized folders, add essentially nothing. Standard stamped clips add a few millimeters and a noticeable hard edge. Deep-carry clips solve the length problem by pushing the knife further into the pocket, but they can add their own kind of presence at the pocket lip. This is its own topic and we'll give it proper attention in a future piece. For now: when you're evaluating closed dimensions, don't evaluate the knife in isolation. Evaluate it with the clip attached, in the position you'll carry it.

What to actually look at when buying

The spec sheet lists blade length prominently. Closed length appears somewhere further down. Handle thickness occasionally makes it in. Handle height, the measurement that most directly determines how much space the knife takes up in a pocket cross-section, almost never appears. Here's what to do instead: look up reviews and carry reports from people with similar carry preferences. Look at photographs of the closed knife from the end, the cross-sectional view, rather than the side. Find the handle thickness number if it's listed, and understand that 0.1" of difference in handle thickness is meaningful. And if you're choosing between two knives with similar blade lengths, weight, and steel, spend five minutes thinking about what the closed knife looks like and how it will sit in the specific pocket you're planning to carry it in. That five minutes will save you from a drawer full of knives you love but don't carry.

The knife you actually carry is infinitely more useful than the knife you don't. Closed dimensions are a spec. They deserve the same attention as blade length, steel, and lock type, and they get a fraction of it. We'll keep saying this until the spec sheets catch up.
